If you signed up for a virtual mailbox at your local Staples, the ground may have shifted under you. Staples Canada’s partnership with iPostal1 appears to have quietly ended. Neither company has announced it, but the evidence on both websites points the same way.
For a few years, the arrangement looked like a natural fit. iPostal1 supplied the software for scanning, forwarding and managing mail online, and Staples supplied hundreds of storefronts where that mail could land. Customers got a real street address at a store near them, in almost every city where Staples operates.
That network now looks to be gone, at least for anyone signing up today.
iPostal1’s Canadian map has shrunk by nearly 90%
iPostal1 once listed more than 300 Canadian addresses. They covered every province and territory, and most major cities that had a Staples store.
Today, the same directory shows fewer than 40 Canadian locations, spread across just four provinces. Not one of the remaining addresses is a Staples store.
| Before | Now | |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian locations | 300+ | Fewer than 40 |
| Provinces and territories covered | All 13 | 4 provinces |
| iPostal1 Staples locations | Most major cities | None |
A drop that size is not normal churn. Independent mail centres come and go on platforms like iPostal1, but they don’t disappear by the hundreds at once. When nearly every location from one retail chain vanishes together, the likeliest cause is that the chain itself stepped away.
Staples has swapped its service page for an affiliate link
The Staples Canada website tells the same story from the other side. It used to host a dedicated page for its virtual mailbox service, described as “powered by iPostal1.” That page has been replaced by an affiliate link that sends visitors to iPostal1’s own website.
The difference matters. A service page means Staples is offering the product through its stores. An affiliate link means Staples is simply referring customers elsewhere, likely for a commission, with no in-store role at all.
What this likely means
Put the two changes together and the conclusion is hard to avoid: the partnership didn’t work out. Staples locations no longer appear to be part of the iPostal1 platform, at least for new sign-ups.
We want to be clear about what we don’t know. Neither company has made a public statement, and the reasons behind the split are unknown. The biggest open question is what happens to existing customers:
- Are current Staples mailboxes still receiving and scanning mail?
- If so, for how long, and will customers get notice before service ends?
- Will affected accounts be moved to another iPostal1 location with a new address?
If you rely on a Staples address for your business registration, banking or government mail, don’t wait for an announcement to find out.
If you have a Staples mailbox, do this now
- Log in to your iPostal1 account. Check whether your Staples address is still listed as active, and look for any notices about your location.
- Contact iPostal1 support. Ask directly whether your address will keep working, and get the answer in writing.
- List everywhere your address is registered. Think business registration, CRA, your bank, payment processors, suppliers, subscriptions and your website.
- Choose a replacement before you need one. Changing a business address can take weeks across government and banking records. Starting early avoids lost mail. iPostal1 does have locations that are not Staples-operated and remain on the platform. You might also considering looking outside iPostal1.
- Set up forwarding for the transition. Keep both addresses running for a few months while senders catch up.
Two Canadian alternatives worth a look
If you’re moving away from iPostal1 or a Staples address, two Canadian providers stand out.
Private Mailbox Canada
Private Mailbox Canada runs multiple locations across Ontario, with expansion into Quebec and Alberta coming soon. It’s a strong fit if you want a real street address in an Ontario city, or if you expect to need addresses in more provinces as the network grows.
TorontoAddress.com
TorontoAddress.com is the leading virtual mailbox provider in the Greater Toronto Area. If your business needs a Toronto, York, Peel, Halton or Durham address, whether for credibility with clients or to be close to where you work, it’s the most established choice in the GTA.
The bottom line
A virtual mailbox is only as reliable as the location behind it. The apparent Staples exit shows how quickly an address can disappear when a partnership ends. When you choose your next provider, pick one that is committed to the locations it offers, and move before your current address stops working.
